On the west coast of the North Island is New Zealand's most famous surf beach: Piha. Home of black iron-sand and awe-inspiring waves, few are strong enough to meet the challenge. However, despite a magnificent rugged coastline and Lion's Head�a huge rock that looms off the coast�there are patrolled areas for a safe swim. Surfers can take their chances with the best waves found at the southern end near Camel Rock. With waves often reaching over 3 metres (9.8 ft), surfing here is not for beginners. The Piha Surf Club's presence is often on the beach in the form of volunteer lifeguards in bright yellow shirts.
