Maungakiekie has been inactive for years as a volcano, but activity on and surrounding the hill has been rampant for centuries. Believed to be the largest pre-historic fort in the world, the hill is the site of New Zealand's largest Maori fortified village. Today, the grounds are protected and include a monument and grave to Sir John Logan Campbell, the ‘founding father’ of Auckland City. It is also a popular recreational reserve with many trails and a scenic landscape. The hill derives its name from a single tree that stands on its highest peak.

A stunning garden that combines European terraced garden design with the native foliage of New Zealand. Set around a 19th century house, the gardens include an herb garden, endangered ferns and fruit trees. A bushwalk and tennis courts are also onsite.

Once a heavily littered and abandoned quarry, Eden Garden was miraculously transformed into a lush garden of native and tropical plants. On the slopes of volcanic Mount Eden its surroundings are striking. The garden is also host to several horticultural shows throughout the year. A lovely cafe is on sight serving fresh baked goods. Open daily from 9am to 4:30pm.

Valeside Gardens
Open year-round Valeside Gardens was designed by Anna Archibald in 1995. Visitors here can view a succulent collection, natives with sub tropicals mixed through to give colour, a fern collection, a woodlands garden, an orchard, vegetable garden, 50 roses, perennials shrubs and much more.

A delightful garden full of bonsais are found in Bob Langholm's backyard. New Zealand's largest collection, the display is impressive. Workshops are also offered. Open by appointment only for individuals, bus tours, weddings and photos.

Auckland Domain
Auckland's oldest gardens began development in 1840 and now flourish magnificently with mature plants and trees that form formal gardens. Guests may also visit a museum, the Fernery, and the Winter Garden or they can relax and picnic on the extensive lawns. Set on an extinct volcano, visitors are often overwhelmed with the beauty.
