Maungakiekie has been inactive for years as a volcano, but activity on and surrounding the hill has been rampant for centuries. Believed to be the largest pre-historic fort in the world, the hill is the site of New Zealand's largest Maori fortified village. Today, the grounds are protected and include a monument and grave to Sir John Logan Campbell, the ‘founding father’ of Auckland City. It is also a popular recreational reserve with many trails and a scenic landscape. The hill derives its name from a single tree that stands on its highest peak. Address: . Auckland New Zealand
